Six steps to setting up a trust
We know financial planning can be complicated – and every family is different. That’s why we make it as simple as possible to set up a trust with Mencap Trust Company.
1. Contact us
Our team will help you get started. We will send you an information pack and all the necessary paperwork you need to complete, which includes collating some proof of identification.
2. Pay the set-up fee
Send us the set-up fee and make an initial gift of £5 into the trust. All our fees are transparent and will be clearly outlined to you during the process.
3. Write a ‘letter of wishes’
This is a document that details how you’d like the trust to be run for your loved one. We will offer guidance and a template to get you started.
4. Contact your solicitor
Update your will so it includes a gift into the trust rather than directly to your loved one. We can also help provide wording for the will if you need it.
5. Send us a copy of your will
We will keep a copy of your will on file.
6. Make the first payment
The trust is then ready for you to pay in the first substantial amount. This can be paid within a few weeks of setting up a trust or several years or decades later, often through an inheritance.
